    12/01/2017 -

    6th January 2017

    Dear Parents,

    Swimming Lessons – Year 4

    As required by the National Curriculum, the children in Y4 will be taking part in a swimming course this term.  This is a government requirement that all pupils in KS2 are taught swimming as part of their PE lessons.  The details of the course have now been finalised and are as follows:

    Day: Every Thursday

    Course begins:       Thursday 12th January 2017

    Course ends:           Thursday 30th March 2017

    Venue:                                   Harmans Water School Pool, Bracknell

                                                    The children will have 30 minutes pool time.

    Transport:                            Collection and return by private coach fitted with seatbelts.

    Course provided by:         Bracknell Swimarium. This company is well

                                                    established and has successfully run courses for Owlsmoor                                                 children since 1992.

    Instruction:                          Children will be divided into ability groups by experienced qualified swimming teachers.

    The groups will be carefully structured, so as to enable all pupils to be taught at their particular level.

    For non-swimmers, the emphasis will be on developing water confidence and the teaching of some basic strokes.  The intermediate group will work on developing their strokes, increasing stamina and speed.  The advanced group will work on perfecting their strokes, as well as being taught the principles and skills of water safety and basic survival.

    The full cost of the swimming course and transport will be paid for by the school.

    If you are DBS checked and are able to help accompany us to the pool and monitor the changing rooms (for which we would be very grateful), please come in and let us know as we would really appreciate some additional helpers.

    We would like to bring to your attention to the following set of rules, which have been put together in order to consider the health and hygiene of all pupils:

    • bathing hats must be worn by ALL swimmers and named on the outside with the child’s first name in a waterproof pen please;
    • a sensible costume should be worn, allowing free movement without embarrassment (we request that girls wear a one piece swimming costume rather than a two piece)
    • all personal items should be clearly named;
    • goggles are not required, but if the children do prefer to use them, they must be named and the child must take responsibility for their safe-keeping;
    • a shower should be taken before and after swimming;
    • no jewellery should be worn in the pool (including stud earrings);
    • infectious foot diseases, e.g. athlete’s foot, verrucas etc. should be covered with a special sock, available from  the chemist;
    • pupils will need a named plastic bag to store wet swimming clothes;
    • swimming aids (e.g. armbands/ floats) will be provided for those who require them, so the children do not need to bring these themselves.

    If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. As the first session will take place next week, we politely request that you complete and return the permission slip below as soon as possible, and no later than Wednesday 11th January 2017. Many thanks for your support with this!

    Yours sincerely,
